Global matcha demand drives shortages, record-high prices in Japan

Matcha is booming in New York — but surging global demand is driving shortages and record-high prices in Japan.

According to JA Zennoh Kyoto Ujicha Distribution Center, the first auction of “tencha” — the raw material of Uji Matcha, saw prices hit a record about $87 per kilogram, compared to about $51 the year before.

Kyoko Gasha visited a tencha tea field in Kyoto, Japan, and the one of New York's top matcha cafes.
