NATO has intercepted Russian bombers and fighter jets over the Baltic Sea.

French Rafale fighters deployed from Lithuania joined jets from Sweden, Finland, Poland, Denmark, and Romania to monitor the Russian flight on Monday.

The Russian mission includes supersonic bombers and about 10 fighters.

Russia's defense ministry says the flight occurs over neutral waters and follows international airspace rules.

NATO often scrambles jets to intercept Russian planes that don't use transponders or file flight plans.

The Baltic air policing mission has been active since 2004, regularly monitoring flights to and from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
