Israel has launched what it calls its largest wave of strikes on Lebanon since the war began, targeting Beirut and other areas with approximately 100 sites hit in rapid succession.

Lebanese security sources describe the assault as the heaviest of the conflict, with the health ministry reporting hundreds killed and wounded.

Many strikes hit densely populated residential and commercial areas not previously targeted and where Hezbollah is not known to operate, taking residents by surprise.

Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and has declared Lebanon excluded from the US–Iran ceasefire, despite Pakistani and European calls for the truce to apply across the region.

Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb reports from Beirut, Lebanon.
