Hantavirus case in Switzerland

Health officials in Switzerland have confirmed that a resident has tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus after returning from the MV Hondius cruise.

The patient, who disembarked the vessel in St. Helena before the outbreak was officially recognized, is currently being treated in a specialized isolation unit in Zurich.

This case represents the first confirmed infection outside of the immediate cruise environment, prompting an urgent contact tracing operation across several European countries.

Authorities are particularly concerned because the Andes strain is one of the few hantaviruses capable of human-to-human transmission.
