Chimpanzee 'Civil War' Stuns Scientists

A decades-long study of the Ngogo chimpanzee group revealed that the community fractured into two distinct groups before the violence began.

The resulting war led to the deaths of at least 28 chimpanzees, including 19 infants who were reportedly torn from their mothers.

Scientists believe the community's previous success and large size may have contributed to the rupture.

The findings offer rare insights into the evolutionary roots of collective violence and have been likened to human civil wars.
