Pope Leo's historic Algeria visit

Pope Leo's historic Algeria visit

On the second day of his tour, the pontiff celebrated a historic Mass at the Basilica of St. Augustine in Annaba, where he paid homage to the fifth-century theologian who inspired his own priesthood.

The trip has been conducted under tight security following reports of failed suicide attacks near the capital.

Leo's presence in the North African nation has shone a rare light on its Christian heritage and the enduring influence of Augustinian thought.

The visit is the first leg of a 10-day tour that will also take the Pope to three other African countries.
