India Enforces Tougher Anti-Paper Leak Law Amid Protests

A new anti-paper leak law came into force in India, mandating up to 10 years in prison and fast-track trials for those involved in leaking public examination papers.

President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, following nationwide youth protests.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he forgave students who abused him during the protests, but opposition leader Rahul Gandhi demanded an apology, saying students did not need forgiveness.

The youth-led Cockroach Movement has gained momentum over exam paper leaks and rising unemployment, forcing the resignation of the education minister.
