Boeing ordered to pay $49.5M

A federal jury has awarded $49.5 million to the family of a young nonprofit worker killed in the 2019 crash of a Boeing 737 Max jet in Ethiopia.

The victim, Samya Stumo, was traveling to her first major assignment when the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff.

The verdict is the latest in a long series of legal challenges for Boeing following the grounding of its 737 Max fleet.

Attorneys for the family argued that the company prioritized profit over safety, leading to the catastrophic failure of the plane's automated flight control system.

Boeing has expressed its deepest condolences to the family but has not yet indicated whether it will appeal the substantial award.
