Cyclone Vaianu Hits New Zealand

The storm, named Cyclone Vaianu, crossed the coast near the Maketu peninsula and is currently tracking toward Hawke's Bay.

While major cities like Auckland were largely bypassed, rural infrastructure has suffered significant damage from heavy rain and large swells.

Emergency services remain on high alert as conditions are expected to worsen throughout Sunday.

Authorities have warned residents to avoid all non-essential travel and prepare for prolonged utility disruptions.
