Ghana Approves Anti-LGBTQ Law

Ghana Approves Anti-LGBTQ Law

Ghana's parliament has approved one of Africa's most repressive anti-LGBTQ laws, imposing prison sentences for same-sex relations and the 'promotion' of LGBTQ activity.

The bill now awaits ratification by President John Mahama amid intense international criticism from human rights groups.

The legislation criminalizes not only same-sex acts but also advocacy and funding for LGBTQ rights organizations.

Human rights defenders warn that the law will lead to a surge in violence and discrimination against the community.

International donors have threatened to withdraw aid if the bill is signed into law, citing violations of basic human freedoms.
