Supreme Court Rules for Chevron
Chevron had argued that it was acting as a federal contractor during World War II and that the lawsuits should therefore be heard in federal rather than state court.
The 8-0 ruling is a significant victory for the energy industry, which is facing multiple similar lawsuits over coastal land loss and environmental degradation.
Louisiana officials had sought the payments to help restore the state's rapidly disappearing coastline, which they claim was damaged by decades of oil production.
The case now returns to a lower court, where the companies will attempt to have the claims dismissed entirely.
