Ebola Cases Spike 40% in Central Africa

Africa's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported a nearly 40 percent increase in weekly Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, bringing the total death toll above 200.

The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, has overwhelmed medical teams and is now the worst known outbreak at this stage.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released $107 million in emergency funds, while the WHO and international partners scrambled to support contact tracing and containment.

At least 35,000 potential contacts have been identified, underscoring the scale of the crisis.
