Brazil Gangs Labeled Terrorists

The U.S. State Department has designated Brazil's two largest criminal organizations, the Red Command and First Capital Command, as foreign terrorist groups.

The move has sparked a diplomatic row with President Lula da Silva, who views the decision as political interference.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the designation, arguing these groups pose a direct threat to regional stability and U.S. interests.

Critics in Brazil contend the timing of the announcement, following a visit by right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro to the White House, is intended to undermine the current administration's security record.
