His wife, Elaine Chao, reportedly remained on a trip to China after his hospitalisation, while aides have refused to disclose the reason for his admission.

Senate Republican leaders insist they have spoken with him and that he is recovering, but the secrecy has drawn comparisons to previous episodes when McConnell froze during press conferences.

The episode has raised concerns about the ability of the Senate to function with a key member absent indefinitely.
