Afghan women's team returns

FIFA has approved the return of the Afghanistan women's national football team to international competition after an eight-year hiatus.

The squad, composed of refugees living in exile, will be allowed to compete without requiring the approval of the Taliban-led government in Kabul.

Former captain Khalida Popal hailed the decision as a historic recognition that provides a symbol of resistance for women back home.

The team, now competing as Afghan Women United, will be eligible for major tournaments including the 2028 Olympics.
