Tony Gonzales to retire

Republican Representative Tony Gonzales of Texas has announced he will retire from Congress following an ethics probe into an extramarital affair with a staffer.

The announcement came shortly after Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell also resigned amid misconduct allegations, deepening the turmoil in the House of Representatives.

Gonzales had faced mounting pressure and a potential expulsion vote after details of the affair and inappropriate communications emerged.

His departure further narrows the slim Republican majority as the chamber returns from its two-week recess.
