Kushner meets Jeffries in private

Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, held a private meeting with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, according to the New York Times.

The meeting took place less than three months before the U.S. midterm elections, in which Democrats aim to take control of the House.

Neither side released details of the discussion, but the encounter was seen as an unusual cross-party contact.

It comes as Republicans see opportunities in progressive primary wins while Democrats embrace debate.
