Mark Carney secures Liberal majority

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party has achieved a decisive victory in three federal byelections, granting the government 174 seats in the House of Commons.

The sweep in ridings such as University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest marks the first time in Canadian history a government has moved from a minority to a majority between general elections.

Carney has pledged to use this new mandate to tackle the rising cost of living, announcing an immediate suspension of the federal fuel excise tax.

The Prime Minister stated he would govern with "humility and determination" as he seeks to build major infrastructure projects and increase Canada's economic independence.
