Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves — the most in a World Cup match without extra time since 1966 — as the tiny Caribbean island earned its first-ever point with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador.

The 37-year-old's heroic performance, after spending a year training alone, sparked celebrations across the nation of 156,000.

Room's display left Ecuador's knockout hopes hanging in the balance ahead of their final group match.

The match was also historic as Chinese referee Ma Ning became the first Chinese official to referee a World Cup match since 2002.
