Péter Magyar ousts Viktor Orbán

Hungarian voters turned out in record numbers to deliver a crushing defeat to the nationalist Fidesz party, unseating one of Europe's most prominent right-wing populists.

The victory for Péter Magyar, a former government insider, is being hailed in Brussels as a turning point that could unblock billions in EU funding for both Hungary and Ukraine.

Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán conceded defeat after what he described as a 'painful but unambiguous' result, marking the end of his self-proclaimed illiberal state.

The outcome is seen as a significant blow to the global MAGA movement and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who counted Orbán as a key ally.
