Wounded Veteran Wins Supreme Court Case
The case was brought by former Army specialist Winston Hencely, who was severely injured in a 2016 blast at Bagram Airfield.
Hencely alleged that the contractor, Fluor Corporation, was negligent in its security practices, allowing the attacker to build the explosive while working for the firm.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the company had waited too long to challenge the jurisdiction of the state court where the suit was filed.
The ruling is expected to make it easier for troops to seek damages from private contractors, who now play an increasingly large role in global military operations.
This marks a significant victory for veterans’ rights advocates who have long fought against legal immunity for negligent contractors.
