Oyo Schoolchildren Rescued After 56-Day Kidnapping

All 46 pupils and staff kidnapped by gunmen from schools in Orire, Oyo state, on May 15 have been rescued, the Nigerian government announced on Friday.

The operation, carried out by security agencies without payment of ransom, led to the arrest of eight kidnappers and the killing of several others.

President Tinubu expressed delight and vowed to ensure justice, while Governor Seyi Makinde thanked the president and service chiefs for their efforts.

The abduction had sparked national outrage, and the rescue was met with relief by families, including the husband of the freed principal, who said 'eight weeks of agony ended.'
