IOC to Pay Olympians for First Time

The IOC has set up a $140 million fund per Olympic cycle, with about 14,000 athletes expected to be eligible starting with the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games.

The decision marks a historic shift for an organization that long resisted direct payments, arguing it would undermine the amateur spirit.

Athlete groups have welcomed the grants but say more needs to be done to ensure fair compensation.

The policy will apply to both Summer and Winter Games going forward.
