Tony Gonzales to retire

Tony Gonzales's announcement followed revelations of inappropriate text messages and a sexual relationship with a subordinate who later took her own life.

The three-term congressman was facing a potential expulsion vote that could have made him only the seventh member ever ousted from the House.

His retirement, set for Tuesday, further thins the Republican majority in the chamber and comes just hours after Democrat Eric Swalwell also resigned amid misconduct claims.

Gonzales stated that it was his 'privilege to serve' but acknowledged that 'there is a season for everything.'
