Messi Hat-Trick Equals World Cup Goals Record

Lionel Messi scored his first World Cup hat-trick to lead Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Algeria, equaling Miroslav Klose's all-time tournament record of 16 goals.

The performance, in his record sixth World Cup appearance, gave the defending champions a commanding start at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium.

Messi later revealed he was emotional after the first goal for personal reasons 'nothing to do with football.' Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said he is no longer surprised by the 'inexplicable' feats of his captain.
