British Gas prepayment meter penalty

British Gas prepayment meter penalty

Energy regulator Ofgem has secured a £20 million compensation package from British Gas following a probe into the forced installation of prepayment meters.

The investigation revealed that debt agents working for the company had forcibly entered the homes of vulnerable customers to fit the devices.

In addition to the penalty, British Gas will write off approximately £70 million in debt for affected households.

This settlement aims to address the significant distress caused to customers during a period of high energy prices and economic strain.
