Slovakia lifelong payments referendum

The upcoming referendum follows a period of intense political debate over the perks afforded to the country's top leaders.

Currently, officials who serve at least two terms are entitled to a monthly payment equal to a lawmaker's salary for the rest of their lives.

Prime Minister Robert Fico is among those who would be affected by the proposed change.

Slovaks will also vote on whether to reopen a special prosecutor's office that was recently closed by the government.

The result of the July 4 vote will be a major indicator of public sentiment toward the ruling coalition.
