Iraq elects Nizar Amidi president

The election of Amidi to the largely ceremonial role is seen as a crucial step toward forming a new government amid the regional fallout of the U.S.-Iran war.

In his first address, the new president pledged an 'Iraq First' policy and called for national unity to address the country's economic challenges.

The vote took place under tight security in Baghdad as the nation continues to deal with the impact of Israeli strikes on neighboring Lebanon.

Amidi's victory is expected to pave the way for the appointment of a new prime minister and the resolution of long-standing disputes between Baghdad and the semi-autonomous Kurdish region.
