Bedford Train Crash Driver Passed Red Signal

The driver who died in the Bedford train collision passed a red signal moments before the crash, according to a preliminary report.

The East Midlands Railway crash killed the driver and injured 162 people, 53 of whom remain in hospital.

Investigators revealed that brakes were applied nine seconds before impact but only slowed the train from 75mph to 49mph.

The tragedy is Britain's worst rail disaster in 20 years and has prompted urgent calls for safety reviews.
