Colombia to Cull 'Cocaine Hippos'

Colombia to Cull 'Cocaine Hippos'

Colombia is set to launch a plan to control its wild hippo population, which has grown to an estimated 160 animals since four were brought to the country in the 1980s.

The government has approved the euthanasia of at least 80 hippos, arguing that the invasive species is displacing native wildlife and polluting water sources.

While the animals have become a popular tourist attraction, they are increasingly aggressive toward local villagers.

The culling plan has faced fierce opposition from animal rights activists, but authorities maintain it is necessary to prevent an ecological catastrophe.
