Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations in France and Spain

More than 20,000 people were evacuated as wildfires tore through southwestern France, with fast-moving flames threatening popular tourist areas.

Spain declared a national emergency in the Madrid region and the province of Avila as several fires burned out of control.

The blazes, fueled by extreme heat and drought, have consumed thousands of hectares and prompted a massive firefighting response across Europe.

In total, more than 10,000 people were evacuated from the Madrid region alone.
