SPLC Indicted on Fraud Charges
The Justice Department has accused the Southern Poverty Law Center of defrauding its donors by failing to disclose that millions of dollars were being used to pay confidential sources inside the Ku Klux Klan and other far-right groups.
The indictment alleges that the organization improperly raised funds under the guise of legal advocacy while operating an undisclosed intelligence network.
SPLC leadership has denied the charges, arguing that the use of informants is a standard tactic also employed by the FBI. The case has sparked a fierce debate over the ethics of private organizations conducting undercover operations against domestic extremist movements.
