FIFA announces World Cup rules

The FIFA Council has approved a series of radical rule changes ahead of the 2026 World Cup, aimed at improving player behavior and promoting youth development.

One controversial new measure includes automatic red cards for players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents or officials, a move intended to combat hidden racist abuse.

FIFA is also considering a requirement for all professional clubs to field at least one homegrown under-21 player at all times.

Additionally, the governing body announced a $100 million increase in the financial pool for participating teams to help offset rising costs in North America.
