Hampshire College to close permanently

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to cease operations, describing the decision as a 'heartbreaking reality' for the campus community.

Hampshire College, founded in 1965, has a notable list of alumni including documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.

The closure follows a broader trend of small private colleges failing to compete in a challenging higher education market.

The administration is currently working on plans to help current students transfer to other institutions and to support faculty and staff during the transition.
