House extends FISA for 10 days

In a post-midnight session marked by internal GOP divisions, House lawmakers voted to extend the government's foreign surveillance powers until April 30.

This short-term renewal came after a bloc of privacy-minded Republicans, supported by some Democrats, defeated multiple attempts to pass longer extensions of 18 months and five years.

The White House and Speaker Mike Johnson had lobbied aggressively for a more permanent reauthorization, arguing that the program is vital for national security.

However, skeptics within the party successfully demanded more time to negotiate reforms aimed at protecting American citizens from warrantless searches.
