Google Rolls Back AI Satellite Image Tool After Backlash

Google disabled a new AI feature in Google Earth that let users generate synthetic satellite imagery within 24 hours of launch, after researchers created convincing fake disaster scenes.

The rollback followed warnings from open-source intelligence experts about the potential for disinformation.

Users had shown that simple prompts could flood social media with realistic but entirely fabricated images of hurricanes, floods and fires.

Google said it would work on stronger guardrails before considering any relaunch.
