The House Judiciary Committee mocked the director, suggesting the gifts reflect "strong notes of insecurity and narcissism." The controversy is particularly sensitive as Patel is currently engaged in a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over claims of workplace alcohol abuse.
