Asylum Seekers to Pay £10,000 Under UK Plan

The UK government announced that asylum seekers will be required to repay around £10,000 for accommodation and support before being granted settled status.

The plan, part of a new immigration bill, has been condemned by charities as ‘performative cruelty’.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said eligible adults would need to pay off the full amount before they can qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

The policy represents a significant hardening of the UK's already restrictive asylum regime.
