Lufthansa cuts 20,000 flights amid war

A deepening energy crisis in Europe has forced Lufthansa to drastically trim its flight schedule to conserve dwindling fuel supplies.

The German carrier is among more than 30 airlines adding surcharges or cutting routes as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz chokes off oil imports.

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen warned that even if the conflict ends, prices will not stabilize for years, creating a 'Surcharge Summer' for travelers.

The crisis has also hit other major carriers including Air Canada and WestJet, who are scrambling to adjust to a 25% surge in airfares.
