Gauff overcomes illness in Madrid

Coco Gauff produced a display of immense resilience at the Madrid Open, overcoming a severe stomach virus to defeat Sorana Cirstea.

The American star was visibly ill and required medical attention after vomiting mid-set, but she rallied from a set down to secure her place in the fourth round.

Several other players, including Aryna Sabalenka and Marin Cilic, have also reported symptoms of a virus or food poisoning circulating at the tournament.

Despite the health scare, Gauff remains one of the favorites to reach the final as she navigates the challenging clay-court season.
