Schaefer wins Calder Trophy

New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been named the NHL's rookie of the year, winning the Calder Trophy in a historic unanimous vote.

Schaefer, the first overall pick of the 2025 draft, is the first player to receive every single first-place vote for the honor since Teemu Selanne in 1993.

His dominant debut season saw him lead all rookies in points and average time on ice, solidifying his role as a cornerstone for the Islanders' franchise.

He is the sixth player in Islanders history to win the prestigious award.
