Asylum Seekers to Pay £10,000 Under UK Plan

The UK government announced that asylum seekers will be required to repay around £10,000 for accommodation and support before being granted settled status.

The plan, part of a new immigration bill, has been condemned by charities as 'performative cruelty' and a barrier to integration.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to formally unveil the policy on Tuesday, which would make Britain one of the few countries to charge asylum seekers for state-funded living costs.

Critics argue the measure will push vulnerable people further into poverty and exploitation.
