Orbán ousted in Hungary

Orbán ousted in Hungary

Hungarian voters have delivered a stunning rebuke to Viktor Orbán’s long-standing illiberal administration, handing a supermajority mandate to the upstart Tisza party.

The result marks the end of a 16-year era for the nationalist leader, who had become a central figure for global far-right movements and a frequent antagonist of Brussels.

Incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar, a former government insider, has pledged to unlock billions in frozen EU funding and pivot the country away from its close ties with Moscow.

The defeat is seen as a major setback for Orbán’s international allies, including Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
