California Chemical Tank Threat Ends

The immediate danger of a massive toxic explosion in Orange County has passed after firefighters successfully cooled a failing chemical storage tank.

The operation has allowed authorities to reduce the evacuation zone, which at its peak affected more than 50,000 residents.

While the 'worst-case scenario' has been averted, officials warn that some environmental risks remain and are continuing to monitor air quality in the area.

Thousands of people have been permitted to return to their homes, though a smaller perimeter remains cordoned off as recovery efforts continue.
