Pope Leo XIV visits Algeria

Pope Leo XIV's landmark visit to Algeria is being hailed as a significant step for Christian-Muslim relations in the region.

The American-born Pope, who has long cited St. Augustine as a primary spiritual influence, spent his second day in the country visiting the archaeological site where the ancient theologian lived and wrote.

Security has been exceptionally tight following reports of failed suicide attacks near the capital, though the Vatican maintains the trip is focused solely on peace and reconciliation.

The visit comes at a time of heightened global tension, with the Pope using his platform to call for an end to the 'folly of war' in the Middle East.
