Substitute Mikel Merino scored a stoppage-time winner as Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in the World Cup round of 16, ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career in tears.

Spain advanced to a quarter-final matchup against the winner of the United States versus Belgium.

Ronaldo confirmed this was his last World Cup but said he would take time before deciding on his Portugal future.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez announced his departure immediately after the match.
