New World Screwworm Outbreak

New World Screwworm Outbreak

Texas is facing a New World screwworm infestation, with Governor Greg Abbott pushing to accelerate the development of a fly-breeding factory to combat its spread.

Canada has also imposed temporary import restrictions on livestock from affected areas in the U.S. A second case of the flesh-eating parasite has been confirmed in a Texas calf, raising fears of a growing outbreak.

Governor Abbott emphasizes that there is a well-established prevention and cure for the spread.

The situation has prompted urgent measures to contain and eradicate the parasite before it severely impacts the cattle population.
