India's delimitation bill controversy

India's delimitation bill controversy

The controversy centers on the government's plan to redraw electoral constituencies based on the 2011 census, a move critics say punishes states that successfully implemented population control.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has vowed to oppose the bill in the Lok Sabha, claiming it is an attempt to change the electoral map of India to favor the ruling party.

Home Minister Amit Shah defended the move, stating that seats for the South would actually increase from 129 to 195 under the new arrangement.

The debate has reignited long-standing tensions between India's Hindi-speaking north and the more developed southern regions.
