Exoneree blocked from Louisiana office

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has signed legislation eliminating a New Orleans-based court clerk position just days before an exoneree was set to take office.

Calvin Duncan, who was overwhelmingly elected to the seat, will now be unable to serve following the Republican-led consolidation effort.

Critics have described the move as a targeted political maneuver intended to prevent a formerly incarcerated individual from holding public office.

Duncan, who spent 28 years in prison before being exonerated, has vowed to challenge the law in court.

The Governor's office maintains that the elimination of the position is a necessary cost-saving measure for the state.
