Meta to cut 8,000 jobs

In its largest round of layoffs in recent years, Meta informed staff that the cuts will take effect on May 20.

Chief People Officer Janelle Gale stated the decision is necessary to offset massive capital expenditure on AI infrastructure.

The move coincides with reports that Microsoft is also offering voluntary buyouts to 7% of its workforce.

This 'employee replacement' phase reflects a broader trend in Silicon Valley where traditional roles are being eliminated in favor of AI-specialized talent.
